When and how often should you bath a baby?

There’s no strict rule for when to start bathing your newborn, and babies don’t need a bath every day.  Most wait until the umbilical cord falls off. Every family and baby is different, so it’s important to find a baby bath routine that feels comfortable and works best for you.

Bathtime safety tips

•    Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a second.

•    Do not allow older children to look after your baby in the bath. Babies of any age should always be supervised by adults while in the bath.

•    Have everything you need to hand before putting the baby in the bath.

•    Make sure the room you're bathing them in is warm.

•    Check the water temperature is correct before you put baby in the bath. Use a thermometer to do this. The water should be around 37-38C.

How to Bath a Baby Safely: Step-by-Step Baby Bath Tips

•    Choose a baby bath time when your little one is calm, awake, and content.

•    Avoid bathing your baby straight after a feed or when they are hungry or tired.

•    Gather all your baby bath essentials before you begin, including: Baby bath or clean sink, Soft towels, Washcloths or cotton wool, Clean nappy, creams and Fresh baby clothes.

•    Use whichever bathing option feels safest and most comfortable for you - a baby bath, sink, or adult bath. Ensure a baby bath is on a flat, stable surface and can not fall or tip over.

•    Always run cold water first, then add hot water and mix well to avoid hot spots.

•    Check the bath water temperature with your wrist or elbow to ensure it feels warm, not hot. 37-38C

•    Only fill the bath with a few centimetres of water to safely support your baby.

•    Remove your baby’s nappy and clean away any mess before placing them in the bath.

•    Support your baby’s head and shoulders securely with one arm at all times.

•    Once your baby is over one month old, you can use a gentle baby cleanser suitable for sensitive skin.

•    Wash your baby’s face first while they are wrapped in a warm towel or muslin. Wash each eye with a separate clean cloth/wet cotton wool first.

•    Use your free hand to gently pour warm water over your baby during bath time.

•    Gently rinse your baby’s hair without placing their head underwater.

•    Keep bath time short, as babies can get cold quickly. Swaddle bathing can help keep your baby warm and be more comforting.

•    Lift your baby out carefully and wrap them immediately in a soft, warm towel.

•    Gently dry your baby, including all the folds in their skin.

•    A warm room after bath time is perfect for a relaxing baby massage.

•    Dress your baby quickly in clean clothes to keep them warm and comfortable.

•    If your baby doesn’t enjoy bath time straight away, don’t worry - they may need time to adjust to the new experience.

What is Topping and tailing?

Topping and tailing is a gentle way to keep your newborn clean without giving them a full bath. Instead of washing the whole body, you simply clean your baby’s face, neck, hands, and bottom. This quick and easy baby care routine is ideal for everyday cleaning and is often recommended until your baby’s umbilical cord has naturally fallen off, which usually happens within the first week or two.

Top and Tail Tips for New Parents:

•    You don’t need any special baby bath equipment for topping and tailing.

•    Always make sure you have everything you need nearby so your baby is never left unattended.

•    Choose a time when your baby is calm and content.

•    Keep the room warm and cosy so your baby doesn’t get cold during cleaning.

•    You can top and tail your baby anywhere that feels comfortable for you, such as: On your knee, on a changing mat, on a soft towel placed on the floor or bed, ensuring your baby cannot fall.

•    There’s no need to fully undress your baby - only uncover the areas you are cleaning.

•    In the UK, tap water is safe for washing your baby. If preferred, you can use cooled boiled water, especially during the newborn stage.
