How to Change a Baby with Reusable Nappies
Why choose Cloth Nappies?
Choosing reusable nappies is one of the biggest ways to reduce your family's environmental impact. Cloth nappies use fewer resources to produce and have a significantly lower carbon footprint than disposable nappies including the washing element. Using just one cloth nappy a day could prevent around 360 disposable nappies from ending up in the waste system every year.
A Simple Guide to Using MuslinZ Reusable Nappies
Making the switch to reusable nappies doesn't have to be complicated. The MuslinZ reusable nappy system is designed to be simple, practical and affordable, from your baby's first days right through to potty training.
What You'll Need for a Newborn
Newborn babies usually need changing every 2–3 hours, day and night. At this stage, you can use the same reusable nappy system for both daytime and overnight.
Most newborns go through around 8–10 nappies every day. It is at this stage the most nappies will be used. So consider:
- The frequency of your washig (daily or every other day)
- Your drying facilities i.e Line, airer or tumble.
If you're using reusable nappies full-time, we recommend having around 24 changes altogether:
- 8 ready to use
- 8 in the wash
- 8 drying or stored ready for the next change
Having enough nappies means you'll never be caught short while waiting for laundry to dry.
Many start using Cloth nappies Part-Time i.e. when at home and use a disposable with out and about. This is a great way to start. Reduced the number required to do this to 12 changes.
Which MuslinZ Nappies Should You Choose?
For newborns, you can use:
- 70cm Muslin Squares
- MuslinZ Prefolds
- 50cm Terry Squares
Muslin Squares and Terry Squares are traditional cloth squares that can be folded around your baby and secured with a Nappy Nippa before putting a waterproof wrap over.
If you prefer something simpler, MuslinZ Prefolds are already stitched into a multi layered pad, making them faster to use whilst still providing excellent absorbency.
You can also simply pad fold any squares into a rectangle and lay them inside a waterproof wrap.

How to Use Your MuslinZ Reusable Nappy
Before first use, wash all new nappies once on a short 30°C cycle. This removes any manufacturing residue and helps the fabric become absorbent. Absorbency will continue to improve over the next few washes.
When changing your baby, you have two options:
- Fold the muslin square, prefold or terry around your baby using a traditional fold and secure it with a Nappy Nippa before adding the wrap over.
- Pad fold the absorbent any of the above into a rectangle and place it inside the flaps of waterproof wrap.
Fitting the Wrap
For the best fit:
- Position the back of the wrap just above your baby's bottom cheeks.
- The front should sit just below the belly button.
- Fasten the poppers so the wrap feels snug but not tight. You should be able to fit one finger around the legs and two fingers comfortably around the tummy.
- The leg elastics should sit comfortably in your baby's natural leg crease, not tightly around the thigh. Tuck in once the cover is secured.
Make sure all of the muslin. terry or prefold is tucked completely inside the wrap to help prevent leaks.
If the wrap stays clean, you can usually reuse it for 2–3 nappy changes, simply replacing the absorbent insert each time.
Need More Absorbency?
As your baby grows, or for longer naps and overnight use, you may want to add extra absorbency.
A folded 20cm MuslinZ Terry Wipe makes an excellent booster, or you can use a MuslinZ Cotton Booster for extra absorbency.
From 3 Months to Potty Training
As your baby gets bigger, you can continue using Muslin Squares, Prefolds or Terry Squares, with boosters or size up to:
- 60cm Terry Squares
- Size 2 & Size 3 Prefolds
These larger options offer more absorbency and are ideal for older babies and toddlers.
MuslinZ Size 2 Wraps are designed to fit from around 6 months through to potty training.
You can also re-purpose your newborn muslins and prefolds as boosters inside larger nappies when extra absorbency is needed.
As babies grow, they usually need fewer nappy changes during the day, but you may want to add extra absorbency overnight once they begin sleeping for longer stretches.
Washing Your MuslinZ Reusable Nappies
Before First Use
Wash all new products once before using them.
- Wash at 30–40°C on a gentle cycle.
- Air dry where possible.
- Do not use fabric conditioner, as it reduces absorbency.
Your nappies will become even more absorbent after 2–4 washes.
Everyday Washing
After use:
- Store dirty nappies in a dry bucket or washable wet bag until wash day.
- If your baby is eating solids or formula, remove as much solid waste as possible into the toilet before storing/washing.
- If your baby is exclusively breastfed, there's no need to remove poo first, as breastmilk poo is water soluble and can go straight into the washing machine and put on a rinse before the main wash.
For the best results:
- Run a rinse cycle first.
- Follow with a full wash at 40c
- Fill the washing machine around three-quarters full (adding towels or bedding if needed).
- Check that no detergent bubbles remain after the final rinse. If they do, run an extra rinse and reduce the amount of detergent next time.
Most reusable nappy parents find that washing powder cleans better than liquid detergent.
Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and very high heat, as these can shorten the life of your nappies.
Drying Your Nappies
Air drying is the most economical option and helps your nappies last longer. most items will dry overnight on an airer.
If you need them dry more quickly, they can also be tumble dried on a low heat.
100% cotton MuslinZ products can safely be tumble dried on a higher heat if needed and can also be dried directly on radiators.
